EXTRA Workshop.1

Experimental Philosophy and the Method of Cases

May 13–14, 2019
Ruhr University Bochum
Convention Centre, Hall 4

Description:
This is the inaugural workshop of the Emmy Noether Group EXTRA on “Experimental Philosophy and the Method of Cases”, which is also the central research topic of the group. In this workshop, we want to address questions about the traditional “method of cases” in philosophy, and how it relates to various results from experimental philosophy and other empirical research. A particular focus will be on the question whether relying on intuitions about hypothetical thought experiment cases is still a trustworthy method in light of various experimental findings, such as cultural variability, order effects, or framing. We will also discuss whether there is a promising defense against this experimental challenge to the method of cases.

Speakers:
Herman Cappelen (University of Oslo / University of St. Andrews)
Adriano Angelucci (University of Urbino)
Joachim Horvath (Ruhr University Bochum / EXTRA)
Steffen Koch (Ruhr University Bochum / EXTRA)
Edouard Machery (University of Pittsburgh / EXTRA)
Jennifer Nado (University of Hong Kong)
Michael Strevens (New York University)
Alex Wiegmann (Ruhr University Bochum / EXTRA)
